Becoming a Plymouth Firefighter
The 2010 hiring process for the Plymouth Fire Department has been temporarily postponed. The Department is currently not accepting applications. Please continue to check back to this site periodically for updates.

Plymouth Firefighters Make a Difference
The men and women of the Plymouth Fire Department are dedicated to providing quality and innovative fire, rescue, and life safety services to a growing community.

The Plymouth Fire Department is a progressive, full-service, paid-on-call department that provides fire protection service to the City of Plymouth.

Our mission, "making a difference through emergency response, customer service, and community education," is demonstrated through our professionally delivered response and community outreach programs.

The fire department is looking for women and men who are at least 18 years old to serve as paid-on-call firefighters.

Firefighters earn an hourly wage that starts at $11.08. Fully experienced firefighters earn $13.59 for the time that they go to school, train or work. They also receive credit toward a tax-deferred pension.

The Plymouth Fire Department is committed to providing the best fire suppression, life safety and rescue service possible. Toward this end, in 1998, the department improved the delivery of fire service in Plymouth by implementing an innovative program, called the duty crew program.

Duty Crew Program
While the department still responds to evening and Sunday calls using the traditional on-call, page-out system, the duty crew program offers another way that firefighters can respond to calls during the daytime. In the duty crew program, firefighters work and train on shifts that they schedule in advance for themselves. Operational, Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. - 9 p.m., the duty crew program has replaced the once "on-call" randomness of the profession with predictability. No longer driven by the page-out system, firefighting has become a predictable part-time job.
Time Commitment/Training
During the first two years after hire, firefighters must commit 10-12 hours per week to the department. This includes firefighting course work, training and scheduled duty crew shifts. Once the required course work is completed, firefighters work an average of 20-30 hours per month.
Personal Enrichment
Few professions provide the sense of accomplishment and personal enrichment that fire service professionals enjoy. There is tremendous satisfaction in having saved a life, controlled a structure fire, comforted an accident victim or taught a survival skill that prevented a child from being injured. Becoming a part-time firefighter may be one of the most personally rewarding things that you ever do.
