Under City ordinance, sump pumps must only pump water outside to the lawn or street. They must be connected to route water outdoors with a rigid pipe. Sump pumps should not be connected to a floor drain, laundry sink or other drain that empties into the City sanitary sewer system.
Sump pumps that are connected to the sanitary sewer system result in unnecessary water treatment charges by sending clean storm water to be treated at the Metropolitan Council's waste water treatment plant in St. Paul. The City will charge a $100 per month penalty for improperly connected sump pumps.
If you will have property damage due to winter sump pump discharge, you can apply for a permit to discharge into the sanitary sewer system from Nov. 15 through March 15. For more information on sump pumps, call the Engineering Division.
