Providing water to residents is one of the City of Plymouth's most important and basic services. Each year, the City sends a Water System Report to all residents. It provides information about the City's tap water and how it compares to standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The City of Plymouth obtains water from groundwater wells. Well depths vary from 302 to 473 feet. Because the hardness of Plymouth's water is about 24 grains per gallon, many residents opt to soften their water.
Before distribution, the City treats water to improve its quality. Iron and manganese are minerals that can affect the water taste and cause staining. These minerals are removed through filtering. A corrosion inhibitor is added to the water to protect home pipes. Water is disinfected using chlorine. Fluoride is added for dental protection.
