The Citizen Public Safety Academy is a 36-hour, 12-week course designed to give citizens working knowledge of the operations and responsibilities of the Plymouth Police and Fire Departments. An effective partnership with the community is attained through the sharing of information and understanding of public safety services. A well-informed citizenry is the greatest ally of law enforcement and the fire service.
Any person, who is at least 15 years old, and either lives, works, or owns a business in Plymouth may make application to the Academy. A criminal history check will be run on all eligible applicants. (A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify an aplicant.) The Police Chief will then make appointments to the Academy. There is no charge to attend the Academy.
Students meet one night each week from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. for twelve weeks. They receive a total of 36 hours of instruction from police officers, firefighters, and other public safety professionals.
The subjects covered in the academy, by lecture and demonstration, include: History of policing, patrol operations, emergency communications, investigations, legal issues, the fire service, police tactics, support operations, auxiliary services, public safety education and community interaction, and decision shooting.
